Unimail ("Unimail", "we", "us") is an independent, unofficial email client built by Seif Elfayoumy for students to access their university email on iOS and Android. This policy explains what information Unimail collects, how it's used, and who it's shared with. It applies to the Unimail app and to this website.
Information we collect
Unimail collects the following:
- Your university email credentials. The username and password you enter to sign in. These are stored locally on your device and are used to connect directly to your university's own mail server, they are not stored on Unimail's servers.
- Your email content. Messages, senders, subjects, and attachments are fetched from your university's mail server to display in the app. Unimail does not keep a permanent copy of your mail on its own servers.
- Device and usage data. We use Firebase (Google) for push notifications, crash reporting, and basic usage analytics (for example, which screens are used, so we know what to fix or improve).
- Advertising data. Unimail may show ads through Google AdMob, which can collect device identifiers to serve and measure ads, subject to Google's own privacy policy.
- Billing information. If you subscribe to Unimail, our payment processor collects the information needed to charge you (such as name, email, and payment method details). Unimail does not receive or store your full card number.
How we use this information
- To authenticate you with your university's mail server and show you your inbox.
- To send push notifications for new mail or account issues (such as an expiring password).
- To operate, secure, and improve the app, including diagnosing crashes and bugs.
- To process and manage your subscription, once subscriptions are available.
Who we share information with
Unimail does not sell your personal information. Information is shared only as needed to run the app:
- Your university's mail server. Necessarily, since Unimail is a client for that mailbox.
- Firebase (Google). For notifications, crash reporting, and analytics.
- Google AdMob. For displaying and measuring ads, where shown.
- Our payment processor. For billing, once subscriptions launch.
Each of these providers processes data under its own privacy policy.
Data retention and security
Your login credentials are stored locally on your device using your device's standard app storage, they are not uploaded to a Unimail-run database. Logging out or deleting the app removes this locally stored data from your device. Because Unimail connects directly to your university's mail server, changing your password there also invalidates any stored credentials.
Your choices
- You can log out at any time to clear locally stored credentials.
- You can uninstall the app to remove all local data.
- You can contact us with questions about your data, or to ask what we hold about you.
Children's privacy
Unimail is intended for university students and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes, for example when subscriptions launch. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
